What is EFT? Breaking down the Emotional Freedom Technique

What is EFT? Breaking down the Emotional Freedom Technique

Welcome Mystics!

Today I want to talk more in depth about a practice I've been sharing in my livestreams for the last couple months,

EFT or the Emotional Freedom Technique, also known as "Tapping"

I first discovered Tapping and the Concept of EFT about 10 years ago. I found a book called "Tapping into Wealth" and I started studying the concept in relation to personal, mental and emotional blockages surrounding Money and Finances.

After I was in a car accident and experienced a spinal injury, I was looking for alternative pain management along with Yoga,

and in my research I found that tapping could be applied to a range of different emotions, traumas, ailments etc as a tool to help us process, acknowledge and release the emotional attachments that come with some of these experience.

In the last year or so,  in revisiting topics surrounding Money Mindset, I picked tapping back up and decided to go through the process of becoming a Certified EFT and TFT (Thought Field Therapy) Practitioner.

I'm SO excited to have received full training to be able to create EFT and TFT sessions to help my clients on a deeper emotional level!

One thing I love about EFT is that once you learn the methods and tapping for yourself, you can use it whenever you need it!

On the other hand, being able to guide you as a Certified Practitioner includes additional exercises, tapping points and algorithms, targeted care, and a dedicated space led by a certified practitioner through deeper emotional issues, traumas and experiences.

Today, we're going to give a quick overview of what is the Emotional Freedom Technique and How it Works!

If you're new to my platform, My name is Nefer and My job as a Certified EFT & TFT Practitioner is to provide you with a personal toolkit, not "fix you", because you’re not broken!

Tools like ETF, TFT and others help support you in uncovering, acknowledging, and gently shifting what’s been lingering underneath the surface.

What is EFT?

EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique, is often called “tapping” because it involves gently tapping on specific points on the body, called Acupressure points (developed primarily by Eastern & Chinese medicine) while bringing attention to a specific emotion, belief, or experience.

These points are linked to energy channels used in acupuncture, called the Meridian System, and the idea is that unresolved emotional stress can cause disruptions in these systems, and your body.

The energy in these channels has many names in different cultures, but has been referred to as our Chi or Qi, or life force energy.

By gently tapping on these points while voicing our thoughts & emotions around a specific subject, we give the nervous system a chance to calm down, regulate and create new emotional associations.

We also help support the open and steady flow of this life force energy, which can also help support our mental, emotional and physical health!

The underlying principle is this: unresolved emotional stress can create blockages or imbalances in the body’s energy system.

Over time, these disruptions can manifest in our emotional responses, mental state, and even physical health.

By tapping on key points while acknowledging what’s coming up internally, whether it’s an emotion, a memory, or a belief, we invite the nervous system to regulate, soothe itself, and respond with greater clarity and calm

So What’s Really Happening When We Tap?

From a scientific standpoint, EFT has been shown in clinical studies to regulate activity in the Amygdala, which is the part of the brain responsible for triggering stress responses.

Basically, tapping helps dial down the fight-flight-freeze response so you can approach emotions, memories, and patterns without becoming overwhelmed by them.

Think of it like this: tapping sends calming signals to your brain while you're in a heightened emotional state, allowing you to reprocess the feeling with safety and presence

And the more you do it, the more your brain starts to rewire itself…i.e less reactivity, more clarity in your next steps, healing and choices.

In short: EFT gives your subconscious mind a new script to work from.

One that doesn’t keep looping the same outdated story.

Our Subconscious Mind Learns two ways: Through Emotion and Through Repetition.

Tapping Frees the Emotional charge from the Memory, event, or belief (aka emotional freedom) and through tapping and repetition, we reprogram our subconscious minds to beliefs that serve our desires and goals.

Put another way, Tapping provides a safe container for the nervous system to regulate and begin processing experiences differently.

Repeated practice gives the brain and body a chance to create new neural associations which can lead to less reactivity, more emotional balance, and improved mental clarity.

You might think of it as giving your subconscious mind a new framework to operate from. One that supports healing, not survival mode.

The Science of EFT 🧬

While once dismissed by mainstream Western medicine, EFT and other meridian-based therapies are now being studied in clinical settings and increasingly recognized for their therapeutic benefits.

If you're interested in the current science behind EFT, I highly recommend watching Dr. Peta Stapleton’s overview of the latest clinical data:
📹 Watch here

It's about 13 minutes and gets more technical, but I personally was amazed at the clinical research and evidence from Brain Scans of EFT Patients.

If all this sounds a little too easy or "woo-woo" allow this short video to add some additional context!

Some of the The clinical studies currently happening in the EFT and TFT Spaces range from patients dealing with everything from Phobias, to PTSD and CPTSD and more.

(Note: There is a short segment showing images from exploratory surgery where the Meridian system was confirmed visually. If you're sensitive to medical imagery, Dr. Stapleton gives a heads-up, although she does not indicate when the slide changes.)

What to Expect While Tapping

One of the first things you need to know is that EFT is a practice.

While some people feel immediate relief, others may notice subtle shifts over days or weeks.

As the video above mentioned, In some clinical studies, participants showed measurable brain changes in as little as 4 to 6 weeks of regular tapping. (1 hour of tapping per week)

In my opinion, one of the most powerful benefits of tapping is that it puts you in the present moment and allows you to get to your personal equilibrium.

Remember, Your process is yours.

Understanding the Points

As you can see by the Meridian diagram on the previous section, There are acupressure points throughout your entire body.

It is believed these points connect with our lymphatic systems, organs, circulatory systems and more. With EFT we focus on several main tapping points to create what is called a Tapping/EFT Sequence.

You may see varying tapping points, or a switch up order of tapping online; and I can’t speak directly to those, the good thing about it is that tapping can help you, even if you focus on one point.

Here are the main tapping points within EFT/Emotional Freedom Technique/Tapping

Why Does This Work?

Our subconscious mind learns through emotion and repetition. It stores the beliefs, experiences, and emotional patterns that often run our day-to-day choices.

EFT gives us a way to interrupt the pattern, access that programming, and teach the body and mind a new way to respond.

You’re essentially telling your system:

“I don’t have to react the way I always have.”

“I don’t have to see this the way I always have.”

“I can create a new program.”

And that realization, along with the ongoing support from EFT and other modalities, creates real transformation.

🔁 Why Tapping Works Over Time

The subconscious mind learns through emotion, repetition, and safety. EFT works because:

  • It helps you feel while staying grounded and present.

    • With EFT we don't ignore, dismiss or try to put away our true feelings, we give ourselves space to address and acknowledge, feel safe, release and then reprogram with positive statements/affirmations

  • It targets stored emotional energy that talk therapy or affirmations may not fully reach

  • With repetition, it rewires your beliefs and reactions

  • You can pair it with other mindset work, coaching, or spiritual practices to go even deeper

There is soooo much more I could share on this amazing process and I definitely encourage you to get into the additional materials shared here!
