The Power of Talismans: History, Crafting, and Modern Use

Happy Jupiter Day!!

(it's Mercury day as I'm writing this) we're back with another blog post and today we're going to be talking about Talismans!

You may or may not know that some of the Spiritual and Magickal systems that I've been discussing over the years, from Kemetic Magic, Solomonic & Angelic Magic & Even the Mansions of the Moon, are all Talismanic based systems of Magic!

I'm excited to share more information about talismans and how they can enhance your spiritual and magical practice, especially because you may be already using them, and may not know it!

If you have a "lucky" piece of jewelry, keychain etc and/or adornments that remind you of your power, a loved one or a specific time in your life; you already are using a form of talismanic magic!

Talismans have been a part of human history for millennia, revered for their ability to harness and channel energies to protect, empower, and bring good fortune to their bearer.

This blog post will take you on a quick journey through the rich history of talismans!

We'll explore how talismans were made historically, dive into some archaeological findings, and provide examples of modern ways to use and activate these powerful objects.

By the end of this post, you'll not only understand the deep significance of talismans but also be equipped to start incorporating them into your own spiritual practice.

What is a Talisman?

At its core, a talisman is an object believed to contain magical properties that provide particular benefits to its owner.

These benefits can range from protection and healing to attracting love and prosperity. Talismans differ from amulets, which are primarily protective; talismans can be created for a variety of purposes depending on the symbols and materials used.

Side Note:

I love how etymology give us more context in the magickal realms! From the origin of the word Talisman, we learn that the word mean to complete a rite, and “end”.

This gives us a tip to visualize the end of our manifested reality and construct the talisman with the end in mind (very law of attraction/law of assumption coded!)

A Brief History of Talismans

The Basis of Talismans: Sigils and Symbols

At the heart of every talisman lies the powerful use of sigils and symbols.

These Symbols are visual representations of an intention or magical goal, condensed into a single, potent image.

In ancient cultures, symbols were often inscribed onto talismans to invoke the favor of deities, harness natural forces, or protect the wearer from harm.

For instance, the Eye of Horus/Heru in ancient Egypt was used for protection and health, while various African cultures used intricate carvings and drawings to communicate with the spirit world.

Sigils, in particular, are a modern adaptation of this ancient practice. A sigil is a unique symbol created to represent a specific desire or intention.

The process of creating a sigil involves writing down the intention, condensing it into a symbol, and then activating it through various ritualistic means.

This practice allows for a deep personal connection to the talisman, as the sigil is often created by the practitioner themselves, infusing it with their energy and intent.

For those eager to dive deeper into the world of sigils, our Sigil 101 replay is available, offering over 7 hours of comprehensive content on creating and activating sigils.

This extensive guide covers everything from the basics of sigil creation to advanced techniques for maximizing their power. It's an invaluable resource for anyone looking to harness the full potential of their talismans.

A lil bit of Talismanic History

Talismans have been an integral part of African spirituality for thousands of years. In many African cultures, objects like stones, bones, and crafted figures were imbued with spiritual significance.

These objects were often used in rituals and ceremonies to invoke the protection and favor of ancestors and deities.

In Ancient Egypt (Kemet), talismans were highly sophisticated and integral to both daily life and spiritual practice. The ancient Egyptians crafted amulets and talismans from materials like gold, precious and semi-precious stones. They were inscribed with hieroglyphs and images of gods/Neter, and each symbol carried specific meanings and powers.

For instance, the ankh, symbolizing life, and the Eye of Ra, representing protection and health, were commonly used.

One of the most famous Egyptian talismans is the scarab beetle (Khepri), symbolizing rebirth and regeneration. Scarab amulets were placed over the hearts of departed loved ones to ensure safe passage to the afterlife.

Archaeological findings, such as those from the tomb of Tutankhamun, have revealed a wealth of these talismans, showcasing their importance in ancient Egyptian culture.

Crafting Talismans Historically

Materials and Methods

Historically, the materials used to make talismans were chosen for their symbolic meanings and inherent properties. For example:

  • Gold: Associated with the sun, royalty, and immortality.
  • Silver: Linked to the moon, purity, and protection.
  • Stones and Crystals: Each type carried specific properties (e.g., lapis lazuli for wisdom/clarity, turquoise for protection).
  • Organic Materials: Such as feathers, bones, and plants, were used for their spiritual significance.

The crafting process itself was often a ritual in itself. In ancient Egypt, the creation of a talisman would involve recitations of spells and prayers to imbue the object with magical properties.

Some notable archaeological finds include:

  • The Tomb of Tutankhamun (14th century BCE): Filled with talismans, including scarabs and the Eye of Horus.
  • The Pyramid Texts (circa 2400-2300 BCE): The oldest known religious texts, detailing the use of amulets and spells for protection in the afterlife.

Modern Use and Activation of Talismans

While the ancient practices of making talismans may seem distant, the fundamental principles remain the same.

Here is an example of a Spell to Activate a Talisman/Amulet, from The Papyrus of Ani in the Per em HRU, The Book of Coming forth from Night into Day, commonly called by it’s mistranslation: The Egyptian Book of the Dead

“ Spell for the Djed Pillar Amulet”

I have come seeking, that I may reverse the steps of the One Hidden of Face and that I might illuminate his hidden place. I am one who stands behind the Djed-pillar on that day of repelling the doomed. I raise up in your protection, O Ausar (Osiris)”

Another from the previous plate (29-B)

“Chapter for a heart amulet of Seheret-Stone

I am the Benu-bird, the Soul of Ra, who guides the Neter to the Duat when they go forth. The souls on earth will do what they desire, and the soul of Ani will go forth at his desire”

Now we have access to resources that give us clues to talismanic magic from all over the world, used for various purposes from Planetary to Angelic throughout history.

Some scholars believe this practice is the origin of wearing jewelry and adornments, as in, it’s always been for ritual purposes, putting our physical vibration in alignment with a certain intention and even adornment had both physical AND spiritual significances.

In the story of Ishtar and Ereshkigal, Ishtar’s jewelry is associated with her power, and with each gate she passes through in the underworld, a piece of jewelry is removed, symbolizing a removal of a power that she possesses.

Today, anyone can create and use talismans by focusing on intention and utilizing symbols that resonate with their goals.

How to Make your own Modern Talisman

  1. Choose Your Material: Select a material that aligns with your intention (e.g., a specific crystal for healing or protection).
  2. Select a Symbol: Pick a symbol that represents your goal. This could be an ancient glyph, a personal symbol, or even a sigil you've created.
  3. Cleanse the Object: Cleanse your talisman to remove any unwanted energies. This can be done by passing it through smoke, placing it in sunlight or moonlight, or using saltwater.
    1. You can also speak your intentions over a bowl of water and dip the talisman in the water.
  4. Set Your Intention: Hold the talisman in your hands and focus on your intention. Visualize your goal as if it has already been achieved.
  5. Activate the Talisman: This can be done through various rituals. Here are a few examples:

Rituals to Activate Your Talisman

Planetary Days and Hours

Each planet governs specific days of the week and hours of the day (We covered that in this blog post), and aligning your talisman with these can amplify its power.

  • Sunday (Sun): Personal power, success, vitality.
  • Monday (Moon): Intuition, emotional balance, psychic abilities.
  • Tuesday (Mars): Courage, protection, strength.
  • Wednesday (Mercury): Communication, intellect, travel.
  • Thursday (Jupiter): Abundance, prosperity, wisdom.
  • Friday (Venus): Love, beauty, harmony.
  • Saturday (Saturn): Discipline, structure, protection.

To activate your talisman, choose the planetary day and hour that align with your intention. Hold your talisman and recite your intention, asking for the planet's energies to infuse the object.

Candle Ritual

Another powerful way to activate your talisman is through a candle ritual. Here’s a simple method:

  1. Choose a Candle Color: Select a candle color that matches your intention (e.g., green for prosperity, red for love, black for protection).
  2. Anoint the Candle: Use an oil and herbs that resonates with your goal. For example, lavender for peace of mind, cinnamon for success & protection, or rose for love.
  3. Carve Symbols: Carve your chosen symbol or sigil into the candle.
  4. Light the Candle: As you light the candle, focus on your intention and visualize the desired outcome.
  5. Pass the Talisman Through the Flame: Carefully pass your talisman through the flame (without burning it), imagining it absorbing the energy of the candle and your intention.

Conclusion

Talismans are more than just beautiful objects; they are powerful tools for manifesting intentions and connecting with ancient wisdom.

From the rich traditions of ancient cultures to modern practices, the use of talismans continues to be a profound way to channel spiritual, magical and Divine energy.
